About Appalachian Art Sales
Turchin Center for the Visual Arts: A Brief History
In 1999 the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts did not exist- it was at the time, a church building for sale. Through the hard work and vision of former Appalachian State University Chancellor Frank Borkowski, his wife Kay, and many others, the arts complex we now experience as a gateway between Appalachian and the town of Boone, North Carolina, was built and has since provided hundreds of classes and exhibits for students and the Appalachian community.
Without all of their efforts we would not be developing Appalachian Art Sales.
Appalachian Art Sales Begins
This website was a 2007 dream of the artist Joseph E. Potter, retired design consultant for museums and commercial art production corporations and fellow artist Maryrose Carroll, whose public sculptures are installed across the United States.
They were planning an art store in the Carroll Gallery at The Turchin Center for the Visual Arts and realized they could provide art to fulfill the public's needs and economically assist artists by offering Appalachian Art in an online format.
In August of 2007 the Advisory Board of The Turchin Center decided to present their Premier Art Auction and Sale which provided focus for the start of this website.
Then, history stepped in with an enormous footprint: the September 1 defeat of University of Michigan by the Appalachian State Mountaineers football team. This outstanding triumph, hailed as "one of the greatest college football upsets of all time," by a team with a very special spirit offered a fine opportunity and public spotlight for taking Appalachian Art to a national arts community online.
Now that we have the nation's attention, we are committed to presenting the finest art available, and to donating sales proceeds to the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts at Appalachian. We are also dedicated to creating some joy for all involved as we do this. We will soon be incorporating as a not for profit division of Carroll Sculpture (www.maryrose.net), in business since 1967. We hope you will watch our progress with interest and become a part of our online family.
